SYLLABUS - DISTANCE LEARNING FORMAT
Course Description: Introduction to physical and chemical aspects of fibers, yarns, fabrics, finishes, and textile coloration. Interrelationships between textile characteristics, properties and end-use requirements.
Purpose of course: To give students an introduction to the study of textiles and a basic understanding of the interrelationships between textile characteristics, properties, and end use.
Required Textbook and Other Materials (available through bookstore)
(1) Collier, B.J. & Tortora, P.G. (2001). Understanding
Textiles, Prentice Hall (6th Ed).
(2) Textile Identification Manual. Textile Fabric Consultants.
(2002 edition).
Instructional Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Describe the physical and chemical properties of fibers.
2. Identify the fabrication and properties of yarns.
3. Identify the various methods of textile fabrication.
4. Recognize and classify the various physical and chemical finishes
and color applied to textiles.
5. Identify the legislative and environmental aspects of textile
manufacturing.
6. Evaluate the advantages and limitations in the performance
and care of textile products.
